Pure tone audiometry (PTA) is a diagnostic test used to evaluate your hearing sensitivity and determine the degree and type of hearing loss. During a pure tone audiometry test, you will be seated in a soundproof booth or room to minimize external noise interference. Then you will be listening to a range of beeps at different levels and frequencies. The purpose of the test is to detect the softest level of the sound, known as the hearing threshold, at each frequency tested.
At Confidence Hearing, our state-of-the-art audiometer can test hearing beyond the routine frequency range up to 12.5KHz to detect hidden hearing loss. This can be specifically beneficial for those suffering from Tinnitus whose hearing result is within normal range with the routine audiometry test.
Speech audiometry is an important component of audiological testing and is conducted by the audiologist to assess your ability to understand spoken words. During a speech audiometry test, you will be listening to the lists of standardized words or sentences at various levels both in quiet and noise.
For example, the words can be presented at a corrected level based on the degree of your hearing loss and then at a normal conversational level. Comparing the results can indicate whether you can benefit from an amplification or not. The results obtained from the speech in noise test can assist the audiologist to recommend the type of the technology from which the client can benefit or advise further audiological supports such as auditory training or counselling.
Tympanometry is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the condition of the middle ear. It measures the movement of the eardrum (tympanic membrane) in response to changes in air pressure. During a tympanometry test, a small probe is inserted into the ear canal. The probe generates a tone and changes the air pressure in the ear canal, causing the eardrum to move. The movement of the eardrum is measured and recorded by the probe, and the results are displayed on a tympanogram.
Tympanometry provides valuable information about the status of the middle ear and can help diagnose various conditions, such as otitis media, middle ear fluid, eustachian tube dysfunction, eardrum perforation, the status of the grommets, and the condition of the small bones in middle ears.
What happens at your hearing test session?
We start by asking you questions about your medical and family history and the areas you most have difficulty hearing.
We check your ear canals and ear drums via a video otoscopy or under an ENT-level microscope. Video otoscopy also allows you to see inside your ear canal up to the eardrum.
We run a tympanometry assessment to evaluate the mobility of the eardrums and the status of the middle ears.
We proceed with a pure tone audiometry to evaluate your hearing status and detect the type and degree of your hearing loss if there is one.
We go ahead with a speech audiometry to better understand your word and/or sentence perception scores both in quiet and noise.
We explain your results with you and suggest appropriate treatment plans.
Finally, reports are supplied to your GP, specialist or other medical or allied health practitioners, as well as teachers for children when required.
